Rice is the seed of the grass species Oryza sativa. As a cereal grain, it is the most widely consumed staple food for a large part of the world's human population, especially in Asia. It is the agricultural commodity with the third-highest worldwide production (rice, 741.5 million tonnes in 2014), after sugarcane (1.9 billion tonnes) and maize (1.0 billion tonnes).

Rice is the most important grain with regard to human nutrition and caloric intake, providing more than one-fifth of the calories consumed worldwide by humans.

India is the leading exporter of the Basmati Rice to the global markets. During 2015-16 the country has exported globally about 40.45 Lakh MT of Basmati Rice and 63.66 Lakh MT Non-Basmati rice for the worth of Rs. 2,2718.44 crores and Rs. 15,129.09 crores respectively. Rice is an important commodity which is being exported to different countries. Basmati and non basmati rice is exported from India to different countries.
